United States Supreme Court Decision

You have probably heard or read reports about the US Supreme Court's decision released on January 2010. The essence of the decision is this: Individuals and corporations are to be treated identically with respect to the application of the First Amendment as it applies to political speech. Most of the attention is being focused on the impact this will have on national elections. The area of greater concern should be the effect at the local or state level. Consider this: The insurance industry decides that it wants a particular change in the law in the state of Connecticut. One of the state representatives is opposed to the change because she believes it will be bad for consumers. The insurance industry will have the ability to spend unlimited money defeating that representative. I ask you how is that similar to what an individual voter can do? Unfortunatly there is no obvious solution to this problem as the Supreme Court has now struck down 100 years of laws that limit the amount of money corporations and unions can spend favoring or defeating a canidate. There is no one to write to and no one to vote for that can affect this change as the Justices are appointed for life. Michael Quinn, Esq.
